When you received your hearing aids, whether from us or another provider, you were probably instructed to return on a regular basis for a “Routine Cleaning.”  Lots of people we work with wonder why we make that recommendation, since they keep their hearing aids in good condition.

The recommendation for routine cleaning is not a negative commentary on your personal cleaning abilities. With very few exceptions (for example, folks with significant vision problems) most people take excellent care of their hearing aids.  The routine cleanings add an extra level of care.

We clean the aids using tools not available to the typical hearing aid user.  We put the aids in a vacuum chamber which pulls out excess moisture.  Remember, we live in New Jersey and there is way too much humidity here! Electronics work best in dry situations, so removing as much moisture as possible is a good thing.  We also suction out all the ports for the microphone and receiver.  These ports are very small and just a little bit of dust or debris that migrates into the port can degrade the sound quality of your instrument.  If there are earmolds or domes associated with your hearing aid, we sanitize them as well.

We know that you always use the dehumidifier you received when you purchased your hearing aid, which helps minimize the buildup of moisture.  However, a more thorough cleaning done 2-3 times a year is helpful in keeping the hearing aids working optimally for as long as possible.

We used to recommend that these cleanings be done on a quarterly basis, but now hearing aids are using nano-coatings and some are waterproof. As a result, routine cleaning done every 4-6 months are considered adequate.
