For most of us, summertime means swimming, cookouts and sunscreen. If you wear hearing aids, these summer activities can wreak havoc with your devices. After all, hearing aids are delicate instruments that are vulnerable to heat and moisture.
But the sunshine and water doesn’t have to be stressful. Follow these 5 tips for healthy hearing in the summer, and contact Associates in Hearing HealthCare today at (856) 266-9590 for more tips on protecting your hearing devices.
1. Use caution in excessive heat.
Avoid extreme temperature changes and direct exposure to the sun. The plastic outer shell of your hearing aid can melt when exposed to intense sunlight or extreme heat for long periods of time. That’s why it is important to not leave your hearing aids inside the glove compartment or sitting on the dashboard of a parked car. Extreme temperatures can also cause your hearing aid batteries to fail.
2. Avoid moisture and use you dehumidifier daily.
Moisture in any device that runs on batteries can be bad news. Remember, most hearing aids are water-resistant, not waterproof. To prolong the life of your hearing aids, carry a waterproof container with you at all times, and take out your hearing devices before swimming or other water sports.
Even everyday moisture, like sweat, can build up in your hearing aids. Leave the battery door open at night to allow the internal components to dry when placing the aids in the dehumidifier.
3. Bring extra batteries.
When traveling, don’t forget to pack extra hearing aid batteries! To maximize the battery life, store your batteries at room temperature. Also, separate your hearing aid batteries from other metal items, like keys or loose change – they could potentially short circuit your batteries.
4. Store devices safely.
Storing your hearing aids safely when not in use is just as important as keeping them cool and dry. These devices are small and could present a choking hazard for children and pets, so be sure to keep them out of reach. For the same reason, store your extra batteries in a secure place as well.
5. Keep devices clean.
Humid weather causes germs, bacteria and fungi to thrive and multiply. Cleaning your hearing aids with disinfectant keeps your devices in peak performance – and gives you peace of mind, too! Use a soft, damp cloth to clean your hearing devices, and invest in disinfecting towelettes. Additionally, be sure to come in for routine maintenance and cleaning during our drop in hours. We use a vacuum chamber to remove moisture and debris.
